Hoxeyville Music Festival
Hoxeyville Music Festival is an annual three-day music festival held in the middle of the Manistee National Forest in Lower Michigan. 2009 was the 7th anniversary of the festival, which included both National and local acts like Buddy Guy, Green Sky Blue Grass and Michigan favorites including Earthworks Music Collective.
The festival is located in a beautiful part of Lower Michigan and was easy to find. Tree Hugger Travel loves the fact that festivalgoer’s camp in the woods, not in a parking lot or an open field. Vehicle’s can be kept by your campsite in many cases. There were water pumps in several locations and a nearby general store for supplies.
The festival also provided a beer tent, vending, mountain biking trails and Disc Golf. For a reasonable fee festivalgoers could take a shuttle to canoe on the Pine River or rent a boat for fishing.
The Hoxeyville Music Festival increased to 3 stages in 2009 with a main outdoor stage venue, a circus tent stage, and a third stage featuring some of areas favorite local acts. I found the entire scene very charming. The staff and volunteers where friendly and despite less then perfect weather, (It rained most of the weekend) people had a great time.
I give the festival organizers kudos for having Tree Hugger Travel friendly policies. I saw extensive recycling and composting going on with recycle stations in several places throughout the site. The festival even showcased a local farmers market offering fruit, veggies, baked goods and locally made arts and crafts.
I got to sit in my first solar powered golf cart. The Solar Power Awareness Man from the Sierra Club showed me how I could charge my camera batteries with solar power. I was very impressed, especially because my batteries were almost dead!
What I liked
The setting :Manistee National Forest
The 3 stages are close together, but not to close for noise pollution
The outhouses were well maintained
Family friendly, kids activities and a kid’s tent
A great party atmosphere that quieted down around 1:00 am
Suggestions
No fire pits allowed. Dang it gets cold in the woods. It rained most of the weekend. Please allow at least one big community fire pit to warm up!
The Vendor food could use more variety or more vendors. They definitely needed more vegetarian options.
